Everybody needs a win

“I firmly believe everybody just needs a win. Pick something that is not too difficult but not too easy, that you can win at.”

Try something new each month

“Just trust me, doing something new each month, changing it up, will keep it fresh and new, and you'll want to keep going. You won't give up because it's new and it's fresh, it's exciting, like dating someone new.”

Moving more helps me sleep

“I feel the more that I stick to my fitness and strength training and make a concerted effort to do that, my body naturally wants to rest and to go to sleep earlier.”

Find one thing you enjoy today

“Find one thing today that you want to do and just go do it. Just one thing. Don't get overwhelmed by all the choices and the options. Maybe you always like to dance, find a dance class and go take it.”

Why Traditional Fitness Goals Often Don't Stick

As my recent guest, Master Personal Trainer Kelley Workman, points out: "People get really excited at the end of the year. They set all these very lofty goals, versus just choosing one small thing to change. They choose too many things at one time, and no one can sustain that."

This approach often leads to:

  • Overwhelming ourselves with too many changes at once
  • Setting rigid, inflexible goals
  • Feeling guilty when we can't maintain the pace
  • Losing motivation when results aren't immediate

The Power of Intentions Over Goals

Instead of setting rigid goals, I encourage you to consider setting intentions. As Kelley explains, "When you put that intention out there, you have some fluidity to it that you can just kind of roll with the punches as you are moving toward that intention."

Your intention might be as simple as "feeling strong." This doesn't mean you have to lift heavy weights every day - it could mean taking a gentle yoga class, going for a walk, or doing some stretching. The key is matching your movement to your energy and life circumstances on any given day.

Creating Sustainable Habits: Start Where You Are

The most powerful approach to lasting fitness is honoring where you are right now. As Kelley emphasizes, "Everyone needs to just honor where they are, at their age, at their capability, at their income level, their job level - honor where you are first and just accept it."

Here's how to build sustainable habits:

  • Choose One Small Thing

Pick something manageable and specific

  • Make it something you can win at
  • Focus on consistency over intensity
  • Schedule Your Time

Block off specific times in your calendar

  • Start with just 30 minutes twice a week
  • Treat it like an important meeting with yourself
  • Build Your Support System

Find like-minded women at your gym or studio

  • Join classes that align with your interests
  • Consider working with a trainer or coach for guidance

The Six-Month Success Timeline

One crucial insight Kelley shared: real, lasting changes take about six months to manifest. "Six months is a good window because you will have days when you're sick, days when you have emergencies... But that's enough of a window if you're truly being consistent."

Remember:

  • Month 1-2: Building the habit
  • Month 3-4: Developing consistency
  • Month 5-6: Seeing tangible results

Staying Motivated for the Long Term

The key to long-term motivation isn't willpower - it's building a practice you genuinely enjoy. Here are some proven strategies:

  • Track Progress Beyond the Scale

Notice improvements in energy levels

  • Celebrate better sleep quality
  • Acknowledge increased strength in daily activities
  • Keep Things Fresh

Try new classes or workout styles

  • Vary your routine monthly
  • Explore different forms of movement
  • Focus on How You Feel

Pay attention to improved mood

  • Notice better body confidence
  • Celebrate increased energy

Moving Forward with Compassion

Remember what Kelley wisely shared: "It's never too late unless you're already put in the ground. Find one thing today that you want to do and just go do it. Just one thing."

Your fitness journey doesn't have to look like anyone else's. The most sustainable approach is one that honors your body, works with your life, and brings you joy in the process.
