Have you ever had a moment where your body knew something before your mind did?

A little whisper of intuition, a tightness in your belly, a sigh of relief? That's body wisdom speaking to you, and it's something many of us have forgotten how to hear.

If you're a midlife woman who feels disconnected from your changing body, you're not alone. Perimenopause and menopause can make us feel like strangers in our own skin. But what if I told you that your body isn't your enemy? It's actually your greatest ally.

Today, I'm sharing the exact practice I use with women in my Body Love Challenge to help them reconnect with their body's innate wisdom and feel at home in their skin again.

Why Midlife Women Feel Disconnected From Their Bodies

When perimenopause arrives unannounced, it can feel like someone switched off the lights to our connection with ourselves. The body that once felt familiar suddenly seems foreign. Weight fluctuations, energy dips, mood swings, loss of libido... these changes can leave us feeling betrayed by our own bodies.

We live in a world that teaches us to override our body's signals. Push through exhaustion. Suppress emotions. Judge and critique our appearance instead of honoring what our body asks for. By midlife, many of us have spent decades ignoring our body's language.

The result? We feel disconnected, frustrated, and at war with ourselves.

But here's what I've learned after 15 years of guiding women through this journey: Your body has been speaking to you all along. You just need to remember how to listen.

What Body Wisdom Really Means for Women Over 40

Body wisdom isn't some mystical concept. It's the deep, intuitive knowledge that resides within you. It's an intelligence that goes beyond logic, beyond appearance, beyond what you've been conditioned to believe about your body.

Your body communicates through three main channels:

  • Sensations: The warmth of sun on your skin, butterflies in your stomach, tension in your shoulders
  • Emotions: That lump in your throat when sad, tingles of excitement, deep sighs of relief
  • Intuition: Those moments when your gut tells you something before your mind catches up

Think of your body as your lifelong companion who has been with you through every moment, holding your experiences, joys, stresses, and transformations. When we're disconnected from this wisdom, we only hear the criticism, exhaustion, and frustration.

Key insight: Body wisdom is the ability to listen, trust, and respond to your body's cues with care instead of judgment. It's about moving from control to connection.

The Simple Practice That Changes Everything

Instead of fighting your body's changes, what if you learned to collaborate with it? What if you shifted from judgment to curiosity, from punishment to care?

This is where somatic movement comes in. "Soma" comes from Greek meaning "the living body." This body-based approach emphasizes tuning into your internal experience: physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts.

When we can feel within our bodies, we access the body's wisdom. Movement becomes a doorway to experiencing greater embodiment... that feeling of being at home in your body.

Step 1: Ground Yourself With Embodiment Tune-In

Start by finding a comfortable seated position. This foundational practice helps you connect with your physical body, emotions, and that innate sense of goodness we all hold within us.

Here's how to do it:

  • Notice how it feels to be supported by the ground beneath your feet and the chair beneath your body
  • Place your hands wherever feels like your center: heart, abdomen, or lower pelvic region
  • Notice how your hands meet your center and how that center receives your touch
  • Allow your hands to be a pathway to internally directed awareness as you softly close your eyes
  • Take three dropping-in breaths: inhale softly through your nose, exhale slowly through your mouth
  • Notice the sensations that reveal the presence of your physical body
  • Ask yourself: "Am I present in my body?" (If the answer is no, that's valid too)
  • Notice your emotional state. What emotions is your body holding right now?
  • Find a part of your body that feels good, alive, or pleasurable
  • Stay present with that feeling of goodness, giving yourself permission to feel it

Step 2: Move What You're Feeling

This is the heart of the practice: a somatic movement called "Moving What You're Feeling." It's one of the most powerful ways to deeply connect with your body and access its wisdom. Choose one track from this specially curated Spotify playlist for this practice

The practice:

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart (or remain seated if preferred)
  • Close your eyes or keep a very soft gaze to bring attention inward
  • Notice how your feet connect to the ground and feel that support
  • Begin by noticing what it feels like to be in your body right now
  • Allow yourself to move with whatever you're feeling
  • If you feel tension, move with that tension. What does it look like?
  • If you feel spacious, explore what spaciousness feels like in movement
  • Don't try to make anything go away. Just explore and move with what's there
  • Let your body guide the movement. It can be flowing, jagged, subtle, or bold
  • Continue until your body naturally comes to stillness

Remember: This isn't a dance or performance. Your movements follow the sensations. There's no right or wrong way to do this.

Step 3: Listen and Appreciate

As you come to stillness:

  • Feel your body in this moment
  • Notice whatever sensations, emotions, and thoughts are present
  • Place no judgment on what you feel. Instead of labeling it good or bad, simply listen
  • Appreciate that you can hear your body's message clearly
  • Offer yourself a gesture of gratitude: a bow, hug, or nod

Action steps to integrate this practice:

  • Start with just 10 minutes daily
  • Journal about what comes up during the movement
  • Notice how this affects your relationship with your body throughout the day
  • Practice self-compassion when challenging emotions arise

Why This Practice Works When Others Don't

Unlike traditional exercise that focuses on external goals, this practice works from the inside out. Instead of trying to fix or change your body, you're learning to collaborate with it.

Research shows that somatic practices help:

  • Reduce stress and regulate the nervous system
  • Increase body awareness and self-trust
  • Release emotional and physical tension
  • Develop greater resilience during life transitions

Most importantly: This practice helps you shift from seeing your body as something that needs to be controlled to recognizing it as a source of wisdom and guidance.

Transform Your Relationship With Your Changing Body

When you practice body wisdom regularly, remarkable things happen:

  • You learn to trust your body's signals instead of overriding them
  • You develop self-compassion for the changes happening in midlife
  • You discover pleasure and aliveness in areas you'd forgotten or ignored
  • You feel more confident navigating life's transitions
  • You cultivate a sense of being at home in your skin

Your body isn't betraying you during menopause. It's asking you to listen more closely. Every sensation, every change, every whisper of intuition is valuable information about what you need to thrive.

Your Next Steps to Feeling at Home in Your Body

Start today with this simple commitment: spend 10 minutes moving what you're feeling. Notice what comes up without trying to change it. Listen to what your body wants to tell you.

Remember, your body has been your faithful companion through every moment of your life. She deserves your kindness, not your criticism. She holds wisdom, not just problems. And she's been waiting patiently for you to come home to her.

The journey back to feeling at home in your body doesn't require perfection. It requires presence. Your body wisdom is already there, ready to guide you toward more pleasure, confidence, and aliveness in this beautiful stage of life.

Key takeaways to remember:

  • Your body speaks through sensations, emotions, and intuition
  • Movement helps you access body wisdom more easily
  • This practice is about collaboration, not control
  • Start small with 10 minutes daily
  • Listen without judgment: your body is your ally

Your pleasure matters. Your body matters. And the wisdom she holds is exactly what you need to navigate midlife with grace and confidence.
